“If there is urgency, it’s probably a need. If there is craving or desire, it’s probably a want. If there is a natural and uncomplicated pull, it’s probably a value.” ~ Thomas J. Leonard
I love a good turn of phrase. Values wanted, needs not apply. Do you have clarity over the needs and wants that drive you versus the values that draw you?
Being clear about your values, the things that attract you without any need for pep talks or motivational speeches, make it clear about the direction you need to take towards what is right for you. It’s the foundation for moving forward, faster, and getting more. More from yourself, more from life.
Don’t shy away from identifying, endorsing, and honoring your values. Also, don’t knee-jerk here and simply say “I know my values.” Do the work, check in with yourself and make sure you don’t have some needs or wants disguising themselves as a value.
Here’s a simple way to get started:
- Print a list of values (lots of sites out there). Highlight ones that resonate with you.
- Take several values tests available online (samples below). List the top from each.
- Review both lists and note any similarities or themes that emerge.
PRO TIP: Keep a printed copy of these in a folder and review fairly regularly. Write out the top values on a 3×5 card, and keep a picture of it in your phone. Use it to guide the goals you’re setting or to deal with the content in your life (events, surprises, people etc.)
