The MVG FWD Reframe-work encourages the review of perspective, how you frame things in life. The words you use inside your head direct your intentions. When you use words like “if” and “then” your perspective becomes anticipatory and reactionary.
Using “if, then” places your role in the situation after it occurs, putting your intention contingent on something. “If, then” framing is aimed at the future. If this happens, then I will…
Life is lived in the present. Replace “if, then” with “this, and”. “This” brings with it something here and now. “And” is additive, in addition to. Both are present focused. I will do this, and…
Putting it into practice:
- “If I win the lottery, then I will have financial peace” becomes “I will budget my money, and have financial peace.”
- “If a better job comes around, then I will be happier” becomes “I will pursue making a change, and find my happiness.”
- “If the opportunity comes, then I will consider it” becomes “I am open to all opportunities, and pursue the ones that pull me toward it.”
The differences may seem subtle, and that is the whole point. Subtle word changes in your perspective can yield big changes in your life. Be the editor, where does your perspective need new words to help you move forward?
