When you lead a team, the first step to doing more is to manage you. A team may not have an “i” in it but it certainly has a “me” in it and that is where you need to start in order to get more from you and your team.
My corporate experience taught me something very valuable: before you hook yourself and your team to a corporate mission, hook yourself to your own. Too often leaders spend more time aligning themselves with something external before they align internally to themselves. This is a recipe for stifled growth and limits the potential of your team.
High performing leaders are extraordinarily selfish. They take the time they need to continually and constantly check in with themselves around six key areas:
Motivation – has anything changed in life that is affecting my motivation?
Values – have any of my core values evolved and are they showing up in my life?
Gifts – what natural gifts do I need to develop and what skills do I need to acquire?
Framing – how is my perspective, the story I tell myself about all things, affecting me?
Work – is my work bringing me joy and fulfillment and is it positively affecting others?
Dreams – are my ambitions the same as they were a year ago, can they be bigger?
Moving forward for a team requires individuals to be moving forward. Are you demonstrating that to the people you are looking for more from?
