Framing is an important skill. How you look at something will determine how it affects you. Change is one of those things where your perspective on it will affect its effect on you.
Change is life. There is no avoiding it. Ignore it at your own peril. You either manage change or change will manage you.
Here’s a fun exercise to do on a weekend morning. For five minutes, brainstorm all the changes occurring right now in your life. No change is too small. If you’ve recently changed your toothpaste, write it down. Afterward, run through these questions for each:
- What is behind this change?
- Is it useful to me?
- What choices are available to me?
- Do I have control over it?
- What do I have control over?
There are lots of changes outside of your control. Identify them, recognize your choices in them, and then manage them to benefit you. All change brings opportunity for you to learn, grow, and move forward.
How you frame change determines if you’re going to manage it or let it manage you. You always have the choice.
