Beware! Self-inflicted Obstacles.

Growing up I was taught an important lesson at an early age. Life is not fair. At the time, I hated to hear it, and over the course of my life, I’ve learned that, well, life isn’t fair. Regardless of your thoughts, actions, intentions, choices, and behaviors, you do not control the outcome.

While you can’t control the outcome, you can control your reaction to it, manifesting as either an intention or an excuse. When things happen that aren’t fair, you either establish an intention to change something or fall back on an excuse to stay stagnant. Either way, the responsibility to move forward is on you, no one else can do it for you.

There is only “I” in intentions, and “U” is at the center of every excuse.

To experience moving forward, remember the mnemonic device you learned in elementary school, “i before e”. Look for an intention you can establish to move you forward before using an excuse, a self-inflicted blocker, to stay put and languish. There are many reasons and opportunities to change your situation; there are always excuses not to.

Life is not fair. Stop expecting it to be. Take a hard look at the excuses you use to stay stuck, and start replacing them with the intention to make the changes necessary to get unstuck.

Control what you can, accept what you cannot. Just move forward.
