Construction site with a 'Slow Down' sign amid scaffolding in Kuwait.

I found an index card I had written three words on: Pause, Pace, Patience. The word “patience” is written larger and the words are stacked vertically with the letters “Pa” underlined in all three words. I have no idea when I wrote it, why I wrote it, or why I underlined the letters.

Sometimes, you’re given clues in life. My habit of writing things down on index cards is helping me grab them, even if I don’t fully understand what I’m to take away from them. Today, looking at the card, I had an insight; “Pa” stands for “personal accountability”.

  1. Pause. Don’t go with the first thing right away.
  2. Pace. Slow down, moderate your thinking.
  3. Patience. Be patient in all things.

What a great method to integrate personal accountability!

There is very little in life you can control outside of what occurs between your two ears. Words and actions require thinking first albeit not always conscious thinking. Pausing first engages conscious thought, increasing the likelihood you won’t allow slip into cruise control mode.

Engaging with your thinking requires you to be an active participant in it. Pacing your thoughts, being deliberate in the speed of them, will pace the words you speak and the actions you take helping prevent slamming on the brakes or frowning in the rear view mirror.

Slowing down requires patience. You live in a world that is constantly connected and constantly moving. Learning to pause and slow down will not seem natural or good at all times. Being patient with yourself teaches you how to be patient with the rest of the world.
